Beauty may only be skin deep but science and technology can help you improve that skin to make you look your best. It is this ethos that drives Dr. Mansi Mukherjee, well-known Cosmetic Dermatologist and the Head of Medical Services and Innovation at Kaya Skin Clinics Middle East.
Dr. Mukherjee has been practising cosmetic dermatology for over 20 years but her commitment to the discipline and busting the myths around it, has led her to being deeply involved with training other doctors and spreading awareness among the general public as well.

Despite the huge demand for aesthetic treatments, Dr Mukherjee says there are still a number of misconceptions around them, especially about Botox, fillers and threads. In this detailed chat with Global Spa, she defines the idea of beauty, shares the benefits of Botox and gives insights on the cutting-edge developments in aesthetics that can transform the lives of millions of men and women across the world.
1.) As a Cosmetic Dermatologist, how would you define beauty?
Beauty is individualistic, there can’t be a template or standard to define it. Standards are unfortunately defined by social media these days. I have patients who want their noses altered because they look bad in a selfie! Such a thought process is wrong. Beauty cannot have a cookie cutter approach. And that’s where expertise in Cosmetic Dermatology comes in. Individualising treatment as per the needs, whether it’s beautification or intelligent aging or correction or transformation, is what is needed. And this is achieved by a thorough consultation and a collaborative approach for every individual. It’s not about changing the way you look, but getting you to look and be what makes you comfortable.
2.) Is Cosmetic Dermatology an art or a science?
I’d say it’s a combination of science, art and mathematics! It’s the hand behind the product that can completely change the result.
3.) What are the tech-driven treatments that are transforming the aesthetics industry?
Not just technology but the delivery of technology is transforming the aesthetics industry. A number of cutting-edge technologies pertaining to radio frequency, lasers, ultrasound etc are being deployed for skin tightening, pigmentation and other issues. What was earlier achieved in eight sessions can be done in five or six today. Similarly, there is a huge improvement in body treatments too. It was believed the only way to lose fat was by sweating it out in the gym. Now there are many FDA approved devices that can help you lose fat, tone muscle and reduce cellulite. And these are all completely non surgical.
4.) You work a lot with Botox. Can you share what are the benefits, risks and the myths surrounding this product?
People are scared of Botox! One big myth is that it’s only for celebrities or those who are in the public eye. But not many are aware of its benefits. Botox is FDA approved for a lot of therapeutic conditions like squint (strabismus), excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis), migraine and involuntary muscle contractions (Dystonias). The results are wonderful, lasting from three-six months and it can be life-changing in these patients. Another misconception is that it gives you a ‘frozen look’ which is far from true. The only risk of Botox is it being practised by the wrong hands. Anybody can use a needle but the right product, right assessment, dosage and placement of the product is what matters the most.
5.) Let’s talk about men. What are the common issues that men seek dermatological assistance for?
Frankly, men are still hesitant to seek assistance for cosmetic issues. More so, Indian men! And most don’t even wear a sunscreen. But the situation is changing. Earlier I’d see women lead their husbands to a clinic, now I see them walk in by themselves. Indian men largely approach us for acne, pigmentation, double chin and abdominal fat treatments. They are more interested in getting a chiseled V-shaped physique and a six pack! Strangely, wrinkles don’t seem to bother them too much!
The scenario is different in the Middle East where men are very open about their skin problems and do not think twice before approaching an expert. In Dubai, a lot of them visit for beard shaping and even enhancements. The most advanced, I’d say, are Southeast Asian men who develop a routine skin care regimen very early in life. When they spot a few lines, they rush to a dermatologist for a treatment!
6.) How popular is Botox among men?
Botox for men is done a little differently from women. However, what needs mention here is that in Botox, the older you are, the longer it takes to impact the static lines on your face. So it is beneficial to start a good skincare regimen at an early age and treat when you start seeing dynamic lines as against when they become permanent.
Remember, prevention is always better than cure. I do not say youngsters need Botox but they should not ignore their skin problems.
7.) What should we know about Botox before going for a treatment?
Make an informed decision. There are other FDA approved products like Botox but the most important thing is to seek the right practitioner who knows how to use the product. Secondly, understand the way Botox works. It’s a five-minute procedure but the results are seen only after 48 hours. Gradually you will see your lines smoothening and the positioning of the brows becoming more natural.
Do your research before going for any treatment. Have a detailed conversation with your doctor about what products will be used, how natural will the look be and what precautions should be taken after the procedure.
8.) The wedding season is upon us. As a Cosmetic Dermatologist, what would be your advice for brides? How many months before the wedding should the prep start?
I feel on D-day, makeup can hide anything! But a wedding is not about D-day alone! Hence, start at least a few months earlier. Start hydrating, eat well and exercise. Learn to handle stress. Get adjusted to a normal skincare regimen. Do not use new products or treatmentson your skin closer to the date of the wedding as you will be in trouble if they don’t suit you. Hence, start improving the texture of your skin through appropriate treatments, at least start six months before your big day. Never leave anything for the end.
